In Islam, children are among the greatest blessings bestowed by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. Among them, the birth of a daughter and her righteous upbringing hold a specially exalted status in the faith. Daughters are not a burden; rather, according to Islamic principles, a virtuous daughter serves as a shield against the fire of Hell and a means for her father to attain Paradise.
The Exalted Status of Daughters in the Holy Qur’an
Before the advent of Islam, during the era of Jahiliyyah (ignorance), Arabs viewed the birth of a daughter as a source of shame, often leading to the horrific practice of burying them alive. The Holy Qur’an condemned this evil practice in the strongest terms, establishing the sanctity of every soul and affirming that both sons and daughters are gifts from Allah.
“To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what he wills. He bestows female [offspring] upon whom He wills, and He bestows male [offspring] upon whom He wills.”
— Surah Ash-Shura (42:49)
Islamic scholars note that by mentioning daughters (inatha) before sons in this verse, Allah emphasizes their high value, honor, and significance in His sight.
Glad Tidings of Paradise from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ repeatedly highlighted the immense rewards and blessings for a father who raises his daughters with love, care, and exemplary Islamic upbringing.
Protection from Hellfire:
Aisha (R.A) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever is tested with daughters and treats them well, they will be a shield for him against the Fire.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
Proximity to the Prophet ﷺ in Paradise:
Anas bin Malik (R.A) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever raises two girls until they reach maturity, he and I will come on the Day of Resurrection like this,” and he intertwined his fingers to show closeness. (Sahih Muslim)
Guaranteed Entrance to Paradise:
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (R.A) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever has three daughters, or three sisters, or two daughters, or two sisters, and he treats them well and fears Allah regarding them, he will enter Paradise.” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi)
Why a Righteous Daughter Opens the Gates of Paradise
There are two fundamental reasons why a daughter becomes a means for her father’s salvation:
- A Father’s Care and Upbringing:
Raising a daughter in accordance with Islamic values—teaching her the Qur’an, modesty, character, and faith—requires immense patience and dedication. In return for this sincere effort, Allah forgives his sins and grants him Paradise. - The Daughter’s Supplication (Sadaqah Jariyah):
If a daughter grows to be righteous, her father continues to benefit even after his passing. The Prophet ﷺ stated that when a person dies, their deeds cease except for three things, one of which is “a righteous child who prays for them” (Sahih Muslim). The sincere prayers of a daughter can elevate her father’s status in the hereafter.
A righteous daughter is not merely a family member; she is a divine mercy from Allah. For a father who guides her with love and compassion, she represents a noble path to achieving eternal success in the afterlife.
