Elon Musk, the owner of electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla and entrepreneur, has announced the registration of a new political party called the ‘America Party’. He announced the formation of this new political party at a time when disagreements between him and US President Donald Trump have worsened. Musk is one of the biggest supporters of Trump’s presidential campaign. He has spent millions of US dollars on Trump’s campaign. After taking office on January 20th, Trump appointed Musk to a senior government position. This was the position of head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Trump created in the name of streamlining government operations. However, within a few months, disagreements arose between Trump and Musk, and they began to clash. Musk eventually left DOGE, citing the need to focus on his own business interests.
The disagreements between Trump and Musk arose over the spending and tax bill proposed by the Trump administration. Trump has named this bill the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’. The US Congress recently passed this bill, and Trump has signed it into law. Even after announcing the formation of a new political party, Musk has continued to criticize Trump’s bill. According to Musk, this bill will lead to America’s bankruptcy. “Today, the America Party has been founded to ensure your freedom,” Musk said while announcing the new political party. “One in two [of you] wants a new political party, so I’ll do it.” Despite his statement, the party has not yet been registered with the main US election commission.
Musk is currently the richest person in the world. In addition to Tesla, he is also the owner of the satellite company SpaceX and spent millions of US dollars on Trump’s campaign. With his announcement of forming a new political party, investors in Tesla have expressed concern. This includes the investment company Azoria Partners. James Fishbeck, the head of Azoria, has asked Tesla to clarify Musk’s political ambitions. He said that with Musk’s new political party, investor confidence would be lost. And that the best way forward for Tesla would be for Musk to abandon his political ambitions and work on strengthening the company.
Musk stepped down from his position as head of DOGE in May. After that, he has threatened to take action against members of Congress who support Trump’s spending and tax bill by forming a new political party. He said he would prevent those members from succeeding in upcoming elections. Responding to these threats last week, Trump said he would take action against Musk. Trump said he would stop the billions of US dollars given as subsidies to Musk’s companies. Trump also spoke in a manner suggesting that Musk, a South African citizen, might need to be deported or sent back to his own country.
Members of Trump’s Republican Party said that the conflict between him and Musk would have negative effects on the party’s future. In this regard, senior members of the party believe that the party will face major challenges in the mid-term congressional elections to be held in 2026, halfway through the presidential term.
