Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) has stated that he is contesting for the presidency of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) to lift Maldivian football from its current low state and restore the lost trust in FAM. After submitting his nomination form today for the FAM election scheduled for the 26th of this month, Thoriq told the media that he is running with the hope of improving FAM financially and in other aspects. He also said that he will form an executive committee and start working on a plan to improve things.
“Our hope is to bring FAM back to a normal process within about a year. This includes organizing both financial matters and tournaments to proceed according to schedule,” said Thoriq. The Member of Parliament for Mahibadhoo constituency, Thoriq, said that even clubs that didn’t support him before are backing him this time, which he believes is because these clubs also want to advance football.
Thoriq said that FIFA objected to not including certain articles when FAM’s constitution was passed this time. He explained that since previous attempts to create zones and associations for football were not implemented, FIFA requested that these be established before seeking approval. “Previously, I proposed to change the constitution, especially led by TC Sports Club, to create four regional associations in four zones of the Maldives, giving the opportunity for these regions to have a say in Maldivian football,” Thoriq said.
Thoriq mentioned that to strengthen this, articles have been included in the recently amended constitution and the sports law. He said that in the future, Maldivian football will progress with the formation of regional associations, allowing teams from the four regions to come and have a say in FAM’s affairs. Noting that FIFA halted the election. Noting that FIFA halted the election twice last year due to processes not being carried out properly, Thoriq expressed his belief that this time the election will proceed without any issues.
“I believe that this time the election will conclude without any problems, and Maldivian football can be restarted,” Thoriq said. can be restarted,” Thoriq said. He pointed out that with the support letters from all 23 clubs that are members of FAM, there won’t be any other candidates eligible to compete against him.
