The Minister of Home Affairs and Culture, Ali Ihsan, has stated that the main goal in strengthening the police service is to enhance the capacity for expediting investigations within the police organization. The minister made these remarks while speaking on PSM News’ “Raajje Miadu” program. Minister of Home Affairs and Culture Ali Ihsan said that special priority is given to advancing the police service in the area of internal security. He stated that efforts to establish police services in areas where they are not currently present and to create the necessary infrastructure are progressing rapidly. The minister added that the government’s aim is to establish police services in every island of the Maldives before the end of this year.
The minister said that the purpose of police stations is to provide police assistance to citizens in matters where it is needed, in close proximity. He added that this would also expedite the investigation of cases reported to the police. “As part of the effort to expand services across the Maldives, practical work on more than 100 police stations is simultaneously progressing at various stages. While many projects have been contracted, the practical work of many projects is underway,” said Home Affairs Minister Ali Ihsan.
The minister stated that in addition to establishing infrastructure, enhancing the working capabilities of the police is the top priority. “The main focus is on increasing investigative capacity and expediting investigations. There are backlogged cases at the investigative stage. Work will speed up when investigative capacity and quality improve,” said Home Affairs Minister Ali Ihsan.
The minister said that efforts to deploy a large number of police officers on the streets to establish public safety and security will also be strengthened. He added that in areas where it is difficult to provide permanent police services, police services will be connected through digital systems.
