To clear the land needed for the construction of a 112-bed tertiary hospital in Vilimale, it has been decided to temporarily relocate the hospital to the Aman Hiya building in Vilimale. Today, the Ministry of Health has handed over the task of relocating Vilimale Hospital to this building to the Male’ City Group of Hospitals. Further details about this are not yet known. It is also not yet known when the relocation process of Vilimale Hospital will begin.
The new hospital in Vilimale is being developed by the Chinese government. The name of the hospital is “China-Maldives Friendship Hospital”. A Letter of Exchange has already been signed for the construction of this hospital. Under the aid from the Chinese government, a 112-bed general hospital is set to be built in Vilimale. The Ministry of Health has previously stated that the hospital in Vilimale, scheduled to be completed by 2027, will be developed to provide all necessary services to the public in the most appropriate manner. They also mentioned that the hospital will be developed in an environmentally friendly way.
Vilimale Hospital, now 29 years old, was initially started as a health center. At that time, services were provided only during official hours in three rooms. In December 1999, the health center began providing 24-hour service. The hospital was moved to its current building on April 15, 2002.
