Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to contest in the 2028 presidential election. Solih announced his intention to run in the upcoming presidential election during a dinner with his team members. Former Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Mohamed Aslam, has confirmed this to “Vaguthu”.
While Solih has decided to contest in the 2028 presidential election, MDP President Abdulla Shahid, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and People’s Majlis member for Hulhumale’ Southhumale’ South constituency, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem, have also expressed interest in running for this election.
Solih was the President of the Maldives from 2018 to 2023. He ran for an additional term in the last presidential election. However, he did not succeed in the 2023 presidential election. Many believe that the main reason for Solih’s failure to win that election was the split of the MDP into two factions, with a new political party called “The Democrats” emerging from within the party, causing a division among members. However, for upcoming elections, former President Mohamed Nasheed and some members of the Democrats have decided to rejoin and work with the MDP.
