A review of the agreement established to strengthen ties between Israel and the European Union suggests that Israel may have violated it due to the crimes being committed in Gaza, Palestine. According to a document from the European Union, the European External Action Service has stated that it is highly likely that Israel has violated the regulations stipulated in the agreement based on its actions in Gaza. The document mentions that, based on investigations by independent international organizations regarding the situation in Gaza, it is believed that Israel has violated articles related to human rights.
The report states that Israel’s repeated obstruction of food, medicine, medical supplies, and other essential items to Gaza is having a negative impact on the entire population of Gaza. The paper released by the European External Action Service details the situation in Gaza. It highlights the ban on bringing aid supplies into Gaza, the ongoing attacks on the city, the high number of civilian casualties in these attacks, assaults on healthcare facilities, forcing Gaza residents to leave their homes, and Israel’s lack of accountability for its actions. The report also sheds light on the situation in the occupied West Bank and the violence of Israeli settlers.
The document states that it relies on evidence verified by independent international organizations. It notes that special attention has been given to recent events in Gaza and the West Bank. This report comes after many months of European countries expressing concern about the inhumane crimes Israel is committing to ethnically cleanse Gaza’s population and the humanitarian situation in Gaza. In response to these concerns, the European Union initiated an audit last month. The Netherlands is leading this effort with the support of 17 countries.
The Agreement between Israel and the European Union
The agreement, which came into effect in 2000, stipulates that the relationship between Israel and the European Union would be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles. To suspend the implementation of this agreement, all 27 members of the European Union must unanimously agree. Foreign officials have been noting from the beginning that such a scenario is very unlikely.
On June 23, the foreign ministers of the European Union are scheduled to meet in Brussels, Belgium. It is expected that the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, will present the findings of the report at this meeting. Some foreign officials have said that after Monday’s meeting, Borrell is likely to propose ways to respond to the report at the foreign ministers’ meeting to be held in July. The question now is how many member countries will dare to remain inactive regarding Israel’s actions, these officials said. They have also emphasized the importance of not falling for Israel’s diversionary tactics to distract from the crimes being committed in Gaza.
The European Union is Israel’s largest trading partner. Even in 2024, the European Union has conducted trade worth 42.6 billion euros with Israel. In 2023, trade between the two parties amounted to 25.6 billion euros.
