Former President Mohamed Nasheed and other members of the Democrats Party have passed a resolution today to rejoin the MDP. The resolution passed at an informal meeting of the Democrats’ National Assembly held yesterday stated that the best way to win the upcoming local council elections, improve the country’s future, maintain an accountable state, and restore the eroding trust in the multi-party competitive political system is to have a strong opposition movement. Therefore, believing that it is important for many to work together, the resolution pledges to join the MDP to achieve that goal.

While 46 people participated in yesterday’s meeting, only about six members opposed joining the MDP. Although a resolution was passed for Nasheed and other Democrats members to sign back to the MDP, senior officials of the Democrats Party said that the party will continue to exist. The Democrats Party, which was formed on July 12, 2023, amid political tensions between then-President and MDP President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Nasheed during the most recent presidential election, passed a resolution today to dissolve the party, while Nasheed met with MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail yesterday.

At a time when Nasheed continues to express interest in running for the upcoming presidential election, Fayyaz said after the meeting with him that they had a very broad exchange of views on the changes in the political landscape and the work ahead. “The country can be put back on the right track only by working together with everyone who works for reform,” Fayyaz said.

“We will dismantle the MDP. We will dismantle it. The roots of that coconut palm have fallen. We will dismantle that party. We will dismantle it. We will dismantle it. We will dismantle it,” — Nasheed said at the ceremony held on July 13, 2023, to sign for the Democrats.

The MDP leadership and many members believe that the main reason the party lost the 2023 presidential election was due to the disagreements between then-President Ibu and Nasheed, with Nasheed forming the Democrats Party and that party also contesting the election.

He signed for the Democrats Party on the night of July 13, 2023, while warning that he would dismantle the MDP. In his warning at the ceremony held that night, he said that the roots of the MDP had fallen like a coconut palm and that he would dismantle the party. Nasheed said that the main goal of creating the MDP was to improve the condition of the people through sound principles and norms.

However, Nasheed said that when the MDP lost those principles, he was forced to leave the party and create the Democrats to uphold those norms. “We will dismantle the MDP. We will dismantle it. The roots of that coconut palm have fallen. We will dismantle that party. We will dismantle it. We will dismantle it. We will dismantle it,” Nasheed said in his warning speech to the MDP.
