Presidential Commission clarifies reason for Ameen’s call to Shujau

The special commission established to investigate the incident of Hawwa Yumna Rasheed falling from a building in Male’ on the night of April 18 has clarified in its report the reason why Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen called then-Police Commissioner Ali Shujau. The report released by the commission also includes the statement given by Minister Ameen. In his statement, Minister Ameen said he called the former commissioner Shujau, who was at a press conference at the time, because Shujau had said it would take time to obtain court orders to enter certain places and houses in connection with the case. Ameen also said he called regarding M. Maandhooge Dekunuge to state that a court order would not be needed to enter that house.

The commission has stated that it is difficult to accept that a Transport Minister would call any police officer and discuss a case in which he has a personal interest, in an incident where a young woman fell from a building in Male’. However, the report also states that the commission does not find that Minister Mohamed Ameen’s phoned Ameen’s phone call had any impact on the investigation of this case.

The commission has also stated that on the night Yumna fell, a group of young people first partied on the terrace of M. Maandhooge Dekunuge, where Ameen resides.
