Ahmed Mujtaba (Mujey), President of Handball Maldives, has stated that they have decided to form a new national team for the Commonwealth Beach Handball Tournament to be held in the Maldives in September. In a special interview given to PSM News, Mujey said that a selection will be held in Male’ within a specific period to form the new senior team. However, the date for this selection has not yet been announced. “We will hold another selection period in Male’. To give more opportunities to additional players,” Mujey said.
While a new selection has been decided to provide opportunities for skilled beach handball players to join the national team, the Commonwealth Beach Handball Tournament, which the newly formed team will compete in, will be held in Kulhudhuffushi City. Previously, 90 percent of the players in the formed national team were from Kulhudhuffushi. That team competed in an international tournament in Oman and secured 7th place in the region. Mujey said that the Maldives beach handball team will continue to be guided by Pakistani coach Asim Rashid. “We will still bring the Pakistani coach. He has achieved very good successes for our team. He is a very good coach,” Mujey said.
Asim Rashid, who is among Pakistan’s most senior coaches, is an experienced regional beach handball coach who has led the Pakistani national team to many successes. Four Asian countries and four African countries will participate in the Commonwealth Beach Handball Tournament to be held in the Maldives. The matches of this tournament will be held from 18-21 at the handball courts in Kulhudhuffushi City. The objectives of holding this tournament include promoting beach handball in the Maldives, providing international players with the opportunity to experience the beautiful beaches of the Maldives, and creating more opportunities for sports tourism.
