
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that food safety is crucial for public health and economic stability. He made this statement in a social media post shared on the occasion of World Food Safety Day. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that we must recognize food safety as an issue that affects every person’s daily life. He also noted that this is a matter connected to public health and economic stability.
This year’s theme for World Food Safety Day, as set by the World Health Organization (WHO), is “Food Safety: Science in Action.” Referring to this theme, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted the importance of scientific research and evidence-based methods in identifying and preventing foodborne diseases. The President said that the government is always working to ensure that the food we consume is safe, nutritious, and reliable.
The United Nations designated June 7th as World Food Safety Day in December 2018 through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly. According to WHO statistics, an average of 1.6 million people fall ill daily due to unsafe food. There are over 200 types of diseases that can spread through unhygienic and unsafe food, ranging from diarrhea to various types of cancer.
Furthermore, WHO statistics show that low and middle-income countries bear an economic burden of 110 billion US dollars annually due to foodborne diseases.
