President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government’s efforts to restore football to its rightful place among Maldivians are heading towards success. The President said this in a post shared on social media on the occasion of International Football Day. The President said that Maldivian football has united the entire nation. And that football has produced many skilled individuals that the country can be proud of. The President also said that football is a sport that has fostered social spirit in all islands of the Maldives, big and small.
While the state of football in the Maldives had deteriorated significantly, this government has been working hard to revive football. With the state of football in the Maldives having declined, the government has been providing financial and other forms of assistance to the football family to bring life back to football and increase Maldives’ participation in international tournaments. It is also noteworthy that due to the delay in starting the Maldivian football season and to pave the way for clubs to recover from financial losses, each club was given one million rufiyaa earlier this year.
Furthermore, while the Sports Act has paved the way for further advancement of football, the newly established Sports Fund will provide many opportunities for training and experience for the advancement of football players, referees, coaches, and clubs, just like other sports in the Maldives. And under the long-term plan for sports in the Maldives, reviving and nurturing football in the Maldives and bringing back the former enthusiasm for football is also an aim of this government.
