The Maldives Police Service has submitted a request to the Prosecutor General’s Office to prosecute former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed and three former Immigration officers, along with one other person, on corruption charges.
According to information provided to PSM News by the PG’s Office, the police submitted the request yesterday to prosecute Shamaan and four others on corruption charges. The PG’s Office stated that they have accepted the case and will make a decision within 15 days.

In a statement released by the police regarding this case, it was mentioned that the investigation revealed that on March 12, Immigration conducted an operation targeting foreigners staying in a house in Maafannu, which was carried out with Shamaan’s knowledge, in violation of rules and regulations. The statement also said that one of the foreigners taken into Immigration custody that night was released under Shamaan’s instructions as an “urgent” matter, and after the release, another Immigration officer took money from the foreigner and brought it to Shamaan’s house.
The police also stated that when Shamaan’s house was searched under a court order, 257,475 rufiyaa, 10,000 US dollars, and currency from some other countries were found. Shamaan was dismissed from his position when this case came to light.
