The former Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan, has been arrested. Shamaan was dismissed from his position yesterday. He and Immigration employees are accused of abusing their official influence. In a statement detailing the case, the police said that employees working in sections other than the Immigration Task Force and Risk Management Section had misused their official influence to search a house where foreigners were living.

The statement also mentioned that foreigners were taken into Immigration custody from that house along with a large sum of money. Furthermore, the police stated that a day later, on the former Controller Shamaan’s order, a foreigner who was taken into detention with 530,000 rufiyaa was released from custody at midnight. Additionally, the police said that an Immigration employee who actively participated in searching the house where these foreigners were arrested met the released foreigner on the street, obtained the money he had, and entered the building where Shamaan was living with that money.

Consequently, in connection with this case, five people were stopped and searched under a court order, and the police seized electronic devices from them. The police also said that a large sum of money and electronic devices were taken into police custody from Shamaan’s residence. The police statement also mentioned that three suspects in the case have been arrested. Shamaan voluntarily presented himself to the police last night.

A police media official said that Shamaan was arrested tonight under a court order. The official stated that he was arrested in connection with the case where some Immigration employees are suspected of misusing their official influence to obtain undue benefits from foreign workers.
