The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has today revealed that Justice Husnu Al Suood has been removed from his position as a Supreme Court Judge. Suood, who was suspended in connection with a case being investigated by the JSC, resigned from his position as a judge yesterday. Suood sent the resignation letter addressed to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
In the letter Suood sent to the JSC, he stated that the Supreme Court had decided that it has the constitutional jurisdiction to hear a case filed by a private individual against the state to invalidate the amendment brought to Article 73 of the Constitution by the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution Act, on the grounds that the amendment is invalid and lacks constitutional authority due to its conflict with the principles and foundations of the 2008 Constitution.
In a brief statement released today confirming receipt of Suood’s letter, the JSC said that as Suood has resigned from his position as a judge, he has been removed from the position effective yesterday. “As Justice Husnu Al Suood of S. Meedhoo Hasankarige, who was serving as a Supreme Court Judge, has resigned from his position as a judge on March 4, 2023, he has been removed from the position of judge effective from that date,” the JSC said.
Husnu Al Suood is one of the three Supreme Court judges who were suspended in connection with cases being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Suood was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge on December 8, 2019.
