President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he will arrange to provide Ramadan allowance to fishermen. Speaking at a meeting with the people of Meedhoo during his ongoing trip to Dhaalu Atoll, the President said that in the coming days, he wants to arrange Ramadan allowance for fishermen, just like for other professions, by facilitating legal matters.

“By facilitating legal matters, we want to arrange Ramadan allowance for fishermen in the future, God willing, just like for other professions. There are many stages to accomplish this as well,” the President said.

As a first step, the President highlighted creating a registry of fishermen. He said that the banking system previously did not recognize fishermen as having a “continuous regular income”.

“So we created a legally recognized registry, by gazetting its rules. For those included in this registry, in the coming days, obtaining loans through the banking system and getting assistance through STO schemes will be facilitated this year. Through stages in the coming days, I hope and want to see that we can arrange for them to receive Ramadan allowance without much delay,” the President said.

He said that Muslims who work within the system should receive Ramadan allowance. He also said that progress is being made towards reaching that point. This government has newly arranged for members of Women’s Development Committees (WDC) to receive Ramadan allowance.
