President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the list of recipients for the 4,000 flats will be announced this week. Towards the end of the previous government’s term, a list of flat recipients was made public. Following numerous complaints, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) halted the process. The previous administration’s ministry also announced the suspension of flat distribution in accordance with the ACC’s directive.

After investigating the matter, the ACC reported that 60 percent of the recipients of the 4,000 flats distributed by the previous government did not meet the eligibility criteria. However, the ACC has authorized the ministry to begin allocating flats to those who were correctly awarded points and met the criteria. Consequently, relevant ministries are currently working on the re-evaluation of the flats.

During his ongoing trip to the islands of Dhaalu Atoll, while addressing the people of Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, the President said that the government’s top priority is to complete the housing projects initiated by the previous administration, distribute the plots and flats that were decided to be given, as well as to start and proceed with the projects outlined in this government’s manifesto.

“As I mentioned in my Presidential Address, we will determine the recipients of the 4,000 flats being built in Hulhumalé and announce them before Ramadan. That work is progressing rapidly. As I assured in my Presidential Address, we will announce the list of 4,000 units that were previously announced, after reviewing the necessary issues and concerns highlighted by the ACC, before the end of this week,” the President said.

This is a project being carried out by India’s JMC Projects Limited and the National Buildings Construction Company (NBCC). Of the 32 towers in this project, NBCC is constructing 16 towers, while JMC is working on the other 16. These towers comprise 2,800 three-bedroom apartments and 1,200 two-bedroom apartments. The two-bedroom apartments are 650 square feet units, while the three-bedroom apartments are 900 square feet. As these are spacious apartments, the FDC (Flats Development Corporation) has stated that basic services will be available in each building before the flats are handed over to the public and people start living in them.
