President signs condolence book for Dr. Manmohan Singh

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has signed the condolence book opened at the Indian High Commission in the Maldives following the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on December 26, 2024.

In the message sent by the President regarding Dr. Manmohan Singh’s passing, he stated that Dr. Singh was an excellent politician and recalled memories of Dr. Singh’s historic visit to the Maldives in November 2011. President Muizzu highlighted that the efforts made to strengthen the “Look East Policy” under Dr. Singh’s leadership played a very important role in increasing development and cooperation in various parts of the South Asian region.

In this message, the President extended condolences on behalf of the Maldivian government and people to Dr. Singh’s family, the Indian government, and the people of India during this time. Dr. Singh was admitted to AIIMS Delhi on the night of December 26, 2024, due to deteriorating health conditions, and the hospital stated that he passed away due to health issues related to old age.

Renowned as a powerful economist, Manmohan Singh is considered the “father” of India’s economic reforms. Singh served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. During his tenure as Finance Minister in the early 1990s, his policies led India towards economic liberalization and globalization.
