Police have launched an operation in anticipation of an increase in alcohol and drug use and trade during the New Year period. The special operation, involving Drug Enforcement, Hulhumale Police, Marine Police, and K. Atoll Police Stations, began yesterday.

The operation will include patrolling Hulhumale lagoon, monitoring cafes and restaurants suspected of smuggling and selling alcohol, and taking action against those violating laws and regulations, according to the police.

The Islamic Ministry has also reminded that displaying symbols or conducting activities of religions other than Islam is prohibited in the Maldives. In a circular signed by Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, it states that according to the regulation on protecting religious unity in the Maldives, it is the responsibility of those who bring foreigners and tourists to the country to provide them with proper guidance.

According to the regulation, non-Muslims residing in or visiting the Maldives are prohibited from openly displaying their religious symbols, conducting religious gatherings in public places, or involving any Maldivian in such activities.
