In response to the rising global fuel prices, the government has introduced a dedicated fuel subsidy and expanded the availability of discounted fuel across more regions to support local fishermen. Under this initiative, vessels selling their catch to MIFCO can procure diesel at a rate of MVR 17.54 per liter. In addition to allocating fuel quotas based on vessel size, a credit facility has been established, allowing fishermen to obtain fuel and settle payments after the sale of their catch. To further streamline the subsidy distribution process, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has mandated that all pelagic fishing vessels register on the “Fahihakatha” portal by the 15th of this month.
