To address the challenges in fish procurement and storage within the Maldivian fishing industry, the government is expeditiously undertaking projects to establish cold storage facilities with a combined capacity of 11,000 metric tonnes across seven islands. Accordingly, the 4,000-tonne facility in Lh. Felivaru is targeted for completion by this year’s Fishermen’s Day. Furthermore, development work is progressing through various stages for similar facilities in GA. Kooddoo, GDh. Thinadhoo, M. Mulah, K. Kanduoiygiri, HA. Ihavandhoo, and Th. Hirilandhoo. Upon completion, these projects will enable the full procurement and storage of the fishermen’s catch without waste, facilitating exports to international markets at competitive prices. This initiative is expected to yield significant benefits for both the fishing community and the national economy.
