Ibrahim Falaah, the Parliamentary Group Leader of the PNC, has strongly criticized former President Abdulla Yameen following the latter’s call for resorts to defy the regulation mandating tourism businesses to exchange 40 percent of their monthly foreign currency earnings through local banks. Falaah characterized Yameen’s appeal as an invitation to engage in unlawful acts, stating that it reflects deep-seated resentment. Furthermore, Falaah noted that recovering the funds allegedly misappropriated from the state during Yameen’s administration would significantly alleviate the current dollar shortage facing the Maldives.
Regarding the new regulation, which is scheduled to take effect next month, the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) emphasized that the decision to mandate foreign currency exchange is essential for strengthening the nation’s foreign reserves and meeting sovereign debt obligations. However, the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has expressed ongoing concerns. MATI argues that since resort operational expenses and various state taxes are required to be settled in US dollars, the obligation to exchange 40 percent of revenue would present substantial challenges to the tourism sector.
