
Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has announced that legislative reforms are underway to develop the mariculture industry and establish an investor-friendly environment in the Maldives. In this regard, amendments to the Fisheries Act are being processed, alongside a new bill concerning uninhabited islands and lagoons which has been submitted to the People’s Majlis.
Under the government’s “Hafutha 14” roadmap, 76 individuals have been trained in this sector to date, with a decision now made to conduct four training programs annually. Furthermore, 13 zones across six atolls have been designated for mariculture. The government has also introduced a specialized financial assistance scheme to facilitate the procurement of sea cages for those aspiring to enter this business.
