
The Cabinet has resolved to work towards making the Maldives the nation with the fewest number of individuals held in pretrial or “Vanuva” detention. In an effort to resolve this long-standing issue, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has allocated a dedicated budget for the judiciary and assured that the Attorney General’s Office will take the necessary steps to expedite the cases of those detained for more than a year. Furthermore, to address space constraints—one of the primary factors contributing to judicial delays—the Criminal Court’s operations have been relocated to a new building in Hulhumalé, resulting in a significant increase in the rate of case clearances.
