The Government of the Maldives has decided to join a Saudi-led defense alliance established to ensure the maritime security of the Red Sea and key straits in the Gulf. The administration has formally sought the necessary approval from the People’s Majlis to finalize this membership.
Comprising 13 Islamic nations alongside Saudi Arabia, the primary objective of this coalition is to protect international shipping lanes and trade routes from emerging threats. The formation of this alliance comes at a critical time, as regional security faces heightened challenges due to increasing attacks on vessels in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
