The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has officially opened bidding for the development of tourist resorts across 15 islands and one lagoon, featuring a dedicated focus on Halal tourism. Specifically, portions of the Makunudhoo reef in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Laamu Fonagaadhoo, and Seenu Dhonhera have been designated for Halal tourism projects.
In alignment with Islamic principles, these specific developments will strictly prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol and pork products. Furthermore, the infrastructure must include dedicated mosques and specialized wellness facilities.
The invitation for bids also encompasses 10 lagoons in the northern atolls, along with Shaviyani Nalandhoo and Noonu Farumuli. These properties are being offered under a 50-year lease agreement, with a 36-month timeline allocated for development. To encourage investment, the government has decided to grant special import duty concessions to successful bidders. The deadline for bid submission is set for late November.
