The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has introduced a streamlined mechanism to facilitate seamless fund transfers for Maldivians residing in India, as well as those visiting for medical or educational purposes. By integrating the Maldives’ “Favara” instant payment system with India’s “Unified Payments Interface” (UPI), the challenges previously associated with traditional remittance counters—such as lengthy processing times and high transaction fees—have been effectively addressed. Users can now transfer funds to India within seconds directly through their preferred banking applications.
This system provides enhanced transparency and security by allowing senders to verify the recipient’s name, real-time exchange rates, and applicable bank fees before finalizing the transaction. Such features ensure a secure environment and minimize the risk of accidental transfers to incorrect accounts. In the initial phase, a monthly transfer limit of approximately USD 250 has been established. Looking ahead, the service is expected to expand, enabling Maldivians to make direct payments at shops and restaurants in India via QR codes. As this service is integrated into existing mobile banking apps, it offers a convenient and reliable solution for all users.
