The President of the Elections Commission, Mohamed Shakeel, has emphasized the importance of finding a legal remedy for the frequent occurrence of elections, noting that back-to-back polls incur significant costs and impose a heavy systemic burden. He stated that the Commission is prepared to hold elections concurrently if the Parliament introduces the necessary legislative changes. This move would aim to reduce election expenditures, allowing those funds to be redirected towards public welfare. However, it is noted that in a previous referendum, the public voted against the proposal to hold presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously.
