The state has collected MVR 1.2 billion (USD 79 million) as Green Tax in the first half of this year, marking an 8.2% increase compared to the same period last year. Introduced in 2016 to fund environmental conservation projects in the Maldives, this tax is levied on tourists, with children under the age of two being exempt. The revenue generated from the Green Tax is utilized by the government for essential environmental initiatives, including the establishment of water and sewerage systems across islands and various coastal protection projects.
