The government has decided to transition the management of the $16 million “Waste-to-Energy” plant in Addu City to a private entity under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. Although construction of the facility was completed in 2023, it possesses the capacity to incinerate 50 tons of waste daily, generating 1.5 megawatts of electricity.

Despite its potential, the plant has remained non-operational due to logistical challenges in securing a sufficient waste supply and a lack of specialized domestic technical expertise required to maintain such advanced technology. To safeguard this significant investment and ensure its long-term operational sustainability, the government now aims to outsource the facility’s management to a qualified private company within a structured legal framework, thereby preventing the deterioration of this high-value asset.
