The People’s Majlis has today granted approval for the appointment of Mohamed Shakeel as the President of the Elections Commission (EC), passing the motion with a majority of 51 votes.
Shakeel, who was formally appointed as a member of the commission by the President on the 24th of this month, brings significant experience to the role, having previously served as both a member and the Director General of the commission. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation. His nomination for the commission’s presidency follows the resignation of the former President, Mohamed Zahid.
