According to the latest statistics from the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the state collected MVR 1.05 billion in Green Tax during the first five months of this year. This represents a 10% increase compared to the corresponding period last year. However, revenue for the month of May witnessed a 32% decline, which is attributed to the seasonal decrease in tourist arrivals.

The Green Tax, which has been in effect since 2016, is levied at a rate of USD 12 per person per day for tourists staying at resorts and safari vessels, and USD 6 for those staying at guesthouses. The revenue generated from this tax is primarily allocated to financing environmental protection initiatives across the islands, such as water and sewerage systems and coastal protection projects.
