Following the tragic diving incident in Vaavu Atoll involving five Italian nationals, His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has visited the site to personally oversee the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is currently conducting a high-risk operation to locate the divers following the incident, which occurred last Thursday. While the body of one individual has been recovered from a depth of 60 meters, the search for the remaining four continues.
During the visit, where he was accompanied by members of the Cabinet, President Muizzu extended his heartfelt condolences to the Italian government and the bereaved families. He further reaffirmed the administration’s full commitment and unwavering support toward the search and recovery mission.
The government noted that despite the extreme depths and hazardous conditions of the underwater cave area where the incident took place, search operations will proceed without interruption as a matter of highest priority.
