The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission has introduced a new regulation aimed at providing special protection and privileges from security forces to journalists reporting on public gatherings. The primary objective of this regulation is to uphold the freedom of the press, ensure equitable opportunities for all media outlets, and guarantee the safety of journalists in the field.
Under this framework, accredited journalists will be granted access to high-activity zones and benefit from streamlined procedures for obtaining information from security authorities. The accreditation will be valid for a duration of one year for local media, three months for international media outlets, and six months for freelance journalists. This initiative marks a significant step toward eliminating the obstacles journalists encounter while reporting on public demonstrations and events.
