Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has officially instructed the Maldives Police Service to broaden and expedite the investigation into the 2021 bomb attack targeting former President Mohamed Nasheed. In a formal communication addressed to the Commissioner of Police, the Prosecutor General emphasized the need to identify and clarify the involvement of any additional individuals who may have been behind the planning and financing of the terrorist act.

While Ahmed Adhuham, who was directly involved in the execution of the attack, is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence, and legal proceedings against six other defendants remain ongoing in court, the masterminds and financial backers of the plot have yet to be brought to justice. This lack of progress in identifying the orchestrators has been a source of continuous concern for President Nasheed and his close associates. The assassination attempt, carried out using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attached to a motorcycle on Majeedhee Magu, resulted in life-threatening injuries to the former President, necessitating extensive medical treatment both in the Maldives and overseas.
