E-Faas Cannot Be Used for Voting in Elections

While voting in Maldivian elections is a constitutional right for every citizen aged 18 and above, specific documentation is required to verify the identity of the voter. Despite the integration of “e-Faas” and digital ID cards into various public services through modern technology, these digital methods are currently not permitted at polling stations.

The primary reason for this restriction is the General Elections Act, which prohibits the carriage of electronic devices capable of recording audio or video into polling booths. Since accessing a digital ID card necessitates the use of a mobile phone, it is not feasible under the existing legal framework.

To ensure the right to vote is upheld, it is mandatory for voters to present a valid, original document, such as a National Identity Card, Passport, or Driver’s License, at the polling station.
