The Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, has disclosed that the Maldives spent MVR 10 billion on fuel imports last year, an amount equivalent to 10 percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Highlighting the significant daily consumption of diesel for energy production, the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependency and achieving a target of 33 percent renewable energy integration. To facilitate this transition, an energy roadmap has been developed, focusing on the modernization of island power grids and the expansion of battery storage systems. Furthermore, the Minister noted that 157 new generators have been dispatched to various islands to enhance current utility services.
