Large-scale violence has broken out across various regions of Mexico following the death of notorious drug lord “El Mencho” during a confrontation with security forces. According to Mexican authorities, Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” died while being transported to Mexico City after sustaining injuries during a heavy gunfight with the military in Jalisco State. The United States had previously announced a $15 million reward for information leading to his whereabouts.

In response to his death, armed groups have instigated significant unrest in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Nayarit, Guanajuato, and Tamaulipas, setting vehicles ablaze and damaging buildings. The escalating violence has disrupted public transportation and led to the closure of schools in several states. Authorities have urged citizens to remain indoors for their safety. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum commended the security forces for the operation and called for an end to the violence, asserting that such lawlessness will not be tolerated.

The 59-year-old Oseguera was considered Mexico’s most prominent cartel leader following the arrests of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Ismael Zambada, both of whom are currently incarcerated in the United States. In ongoing operations to contain the situation, security forces have seized a large quantity of weapons and apprehended several individuals affiliated with Oseguera’s cartel.
