The first phase of the development project for the Maldives’ primary commercial port in Thilafushi was officially awarded to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) today. According to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), this expansion will increase the port’s capacity from its current 5 hectares to 20 hectares. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the new port is expected to streamline cargo clearance, significantly reducing the turnaround time to 48 hours.

Designed to meet the nation’s maritime needs for the next 30 years, physical construction is set to commence immediately following the finalization of the design phase. The government aims to relocate main port operations to Thilafushi by November next year. This strategic initiative is expected to provide a sustainable solution to the long-standing congestion issues at the Malé region ports and serve as a major catalyst for the economic growth of the Maldives.
