With the aim of strengthening the national economy, the government has decided to develop Addu City as a premier IT hub for the Maldives. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that, starting in 2027, Addu City will be designated as a special zone providing various incentives and concessions for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

In addition, the government has implemented significant measures to address the challenges faced by businesses. These include allowing demurrage and freight charges to be settled in Maldivian Rufiyaa, reducing fees for cafes, and providing concessions on expatriate quota fees. Furthermore, efforts are being made to facilitate online payment gateways, and the government aims to complete the new Business Center Corporation (BCC) building by November of this year.
