In a significant move to ensure that the profits from the tourism industry directly benefit the public, the government has decided to deposit at least $400 annually into the bank account of every Maldivian citizen. Under this initiative announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the government will develop 10 resorts within the next three years, making every Maldivian citizen a shareholder in these establishments. Starting from the year 2030, these payments will be disbursed, marking the first time that the benefits of the Maldives’ natural resources will be distributed directly and equitably among all citizens.
