Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policy is to serve the public with maximum transparency, and that the President consistently instructs all levels of government to remain accountable to the citizens.

The Vice President made these remarks while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the People’s National Congress (PNC) campaign office for the Maafannu West constituency.

Vice President Latheef highlighted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office with a comprehensive and clear roadmap for the development of the Maldives. He emphasized the President’s vision to foster stability, security, and progress throughout the nation.

During his speech, the Vice President noted that holding the government accountable is a fundamental right within a multi-party democracy. While stating that this responsibility primarily lies with the opposition, he stressed that it must be conducted in a respectful and constructive manner. He further pointed out that criticisms and efforts to ensure accountability should be responsible, ensuring they do not disrupt social harmony or incite hatred, animosity, and personal vendettas within the community.

“We wish to move past the events witnessed prior to 2008. These are not practices we want to see repeated in our political landscape, nor are they the examples today’s generations need. There will be discourse regarding holding leaders accountable, and there will be matters that resonate with the public. However, I urge that this be done with the decorum I mentioned. Our President is a leader who possesses the courage to be held accountable,” the Vice President said.

The Vice President also touched upon the social challenges facing the capital, Malé City, and highlighted the efforts being made by President Dr. Muizzu to address these issues.

In this regard, Vice President Latheef noted that the President is prioritizing the enhancement of the nation’s social fabric by working to establish necessary laws, regulations, and policies through Parliament. However, he expressed concern that the Malé City Council has not provided its full cooperation to the administration during its time in office so far.
