Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has stated that the current administration is actively addressing the challenges and concerns faced by the fishing community. Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony of a tuna cannery in GDh. Fiyoaree, the Minister highlighted that the government is working to increase the nation’s fish storage capacity from 9,500 tons to 25,000 tons. This expansion aims to ensure that Maldivian fisheries products command a fair price in the international market.

The establishment of the 3,000-ton cold storage facility in Fiyoaree is expected to eliminate the need for local fishermen to undertake long journeys to sell their catch. The government aims to complete this project by the end of next year, ensuring that the economic benefits of the fisheries sector reach the citizens directly at the local island level.
