Practical work has officially commenced on “Project Aila,” the first sustainable township in the Maldives, spanning across three lagoons in Noonu Atoll. Awarded to Crystals Holdings under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework, this ambitious $750 million mega-project marks a significant step towards transforming the Maldives from being solely a holiday destination into a premier hub for living and investment.

This township will feature world-class educational and healthcare services, alongside specialized tourism training centers and dedicated rehabilitation facilities for athletes. Designed with a core focus on environmental sustainability, 60 percent of the project’s energy requirements will be met through renewable sources. Furthermore, to ensure food security, the development includes a vast 17-hectare agricultural zone. With a completion target set for 2028, this project is expected to diversify the national economy and create new employment opportunities for the youth, paving a promising path for permanent residency within their home country.
