Maldivian, the national airline, has today commenced inaugural flights aimed at establishing air connectivity between the four southernmost atolls of the Maldives: Addu, Fuvahmulah, Gaafu Alifu, and Gaafu Dhaalu. This inaugural journey from Addu to Fuvahmulah marks the prelude to the official commencement of scheduled operations between the airports of these four atolls, set to begin on February 1st.
Utilizing Twin Otter aircraft, these flights will significantly reduce travel time, transforming a ferry journey that previously took over an hour into a swift 20-minute flight. This enhancement in transport is expected to provide substantial relief to residents traveling for medical services and other essential needs. Furthermore, it will facilitate seamless travel for tourists arriving at Gan International Airport to explore the southern atolls, thereby boosting the regional tourism sector. Maldivian highlighted that the realization of this project signifies the fulfillment of a presidential pledge dedicated to the welfare of the citizens.
