Connecting Southern Atolls is a Transformative Change for Development: Minister Ihsan

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsan, has stated that connecting the southern atolls will bring a transformative change, allowing citizens to experience the true essence of development.

Speaking at a ceremony held at Gan International Airport in Addu City to launch Maldivian’s seaplane service connecting the four southern atolls, the Minister highlighted the evolution of the southern transport system. He noted that connecting these atolls via seaplane reflects the President’s vision of maximizing the utility of infrastructure to ensure direct benefits for the people.

Minister Ihsan observed that while seaplanes and the capacity to operate them from airports have existed in the Maldives for decades, such services were never previously established in the south. He emphasized that the commencement of this service today is a result of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to providing services that significantly enhance the daily lives of citizens.

Furthermore, the Minister noted that this initiative was launched following the President’s direct engagement with the people of the south, understanding their needs, and subsequent instructions to relevant companies. He highlighted that this service would provide immense relief to citizens traveling between islands to access essential services.

“We are talking about a significant shift—from a five-hour journey on a calm sea, to an hour and a half, and now down to just 20 minutes. We are addressing the challenges of the past, where rough seas meant canceling trips, turning back halfway, or an hour-and-a-half journey stretching into three hours. Therefore, this decision brings a change that allows us to truly feel the impact of development in our lives,” Minister Ihsan stated.

The Minister also pointed out that one of the biggest challenges currently facing the tourism sector is the stagnation of bed nights. He remarked that with the diverse experiences available in the south, the ease of inter-island travel presents a vital opportunity to increase bed nights. Minister Ali Ihsan concluded by stating that what has been initiated is the foundation of an integrated tourism ecosystem for the southern region.
