In accordance with the pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has initiated the process of transporting canned tuna cases to the atolls. These supplies are being distributed to households across the country in preparation for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
The logistics for transporting these cases to the outlying atolls are being coordinated through the State Trading Organization (STO).
While the distribution within the Greater Malé Area commenced on January 24th, the nationwide operation is being carried out as a collaborative effort involving the Ministry, various State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and the Maldives Police Service.
The Ministry has confirmed that regional storage facilities have already been established to streamline the logistics. From these strategic hubs, the tuna cases will soon be dispatched to individual islands for final distribution.
At the island level, the distribution of these Ramadan gifts will be managed under the supervision of the respective local councils. According to the household registry compiled for this year’s initiative, there are a total of 56,918 households across the cities and islands, corresponding to 61,755 domestic electricity meters.
A total of 118,673 cases of canned tuna are scheduled to be distributed as part of this year’s government Ramadan gift program.
