France has delivered three Rafale fighter jets to Indonesia as part of a multi-billion dollar defense agreement.

In 2022, Indonesia signed an $8.1 billion defense deal with France to modernize its aging military hardware. Under this agreement, France is set to provide Indonesia with 42 Rafale fighter jets, along with other military equipment, including submarines.

A spokesperson for the French Ministry of Defense stated that additional aircraft are scheduled to be delivered to Indonesia within this year. However, the spokesperson did not specify the exact number of jets to be handed over during this period. Since assuming office, President Prabowo Subianto, who served for many years as a high-ranking military official, has prioritized the modernization of the nation’s military capabilities.

In addition to the partnership with France, Indonesia is engaged in discussions to acquire fighter jets and advanced military equipment from China, the United States, and Turkey. Furthermore, Reuters reported last month that negotiations have taken place with Pakistan to establish an agreement for the procurement of fighter aircraft and military drones.

To support the modernization of Indonesia’s military infrastructure, President Subianto’s administration has also allocated a substantial defense budget.
