Indonesia’s disaster management agency has confirmed that at least seven people have lost their lives due to landslides triggered by torrential rainfall across the country.
According to the agency, the disaster struck a small village in West Bandung, where 82 individuals remain missing following the landslide.
A spokesperson for the agency informed Reuters that search and rescue operations are currently underway, with the highest priority being the location of the missing persons. Indonesia’s meteorological department has warned that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist, with heavy rainfall forecasted for the western regions of the country over the coming week.
Indonesia is frequently prone to landslides and mudslides during the rainy season. Authorities noted that the severity of such incidents has been exacerbated by widespread deforestation and illegal mining activities in several areas.
