The overwhelming surge in motorcycle numbers on the streets of Malé, coupled with a severe shortage of parking spaces, has led to significant transportation challenges. Statistics indicate that motorcycles account for 93 percent of all vehicles operating within the Greater Malé area. Malé City Mayor Adam Azim emphasizes that establishing a reliable, punctual, and high-quality public transportation system is essential to addressing this issue. He noted that the primary solutions involve regulating vehicle imports and significantly expanding and strengthening existing bus services.

Furthermore, the Mayor highlighted that achieving these objectives requires decisive political leadership and sincere commitment from both the national government and the city council. If appropriate measures are implemented effectively, a permanent solution could be realized within the next five to eight years, transforming Malé’s streets into safe, congestion-free environments.
